News from Our Machinery Fleet: Investments in New Technologies

Technological progress never stands still – and the same applies to our machinery fleet. To meet the increasing demands for precision, efficiency, and production depth, we consistently invest in new manufacturing technologies and future-proof solutions. Two recent acquisitions are particularly noteworthy.

New Capabilities in Gear Machining: Turning-Milling Center INDEX G220

With the INDEX G220, we are expanding our capacity for power skiving.

With the new turning-milling center of the INDEX G220 type, we are tapping into the power skiving process – a highly productive, continuous machining method for both straight and helical internal and external gear teeth. The system impresses with its dynamic performance, high rigidity, and excellent damping characteristics. This allows for flexible gear modifications to profile and flank, precise orientation of holes and keyways, and defined deburring, undercutting, and chamfering of gears. It is also possible to machine close to shoulders and to produce tapered gears. Compared to gear shaping, gear quality can be improved by up to two classes.

Technological features of power skiving:

  • Soft and hard finishing of internal and external gears
  • Module range: 0.5 to 4
  • Flexible gear profile and flank modifications
  • Defined positional orientation of bores and keyways
  • Defined deburring, undercutting, and chamfering of gears
  • Conical gear geometries

Heat Treatment on a New Level: Induction Hardening

With the MIND-L 1000 from eldec, we are expanding our hardening shop with induction hardening.

We have also expanded our expertise in the field of heat treatment. With the MIND-L 1000 from eldec, we are adding induction hardening to our hardening shop – a process known for precise process control and high repeatability. The system is used for hardening shafts and gears (both internal and external toothing). The fully automated process with robotic handling ensures high throughput with consistently high quality.

Technological features of induction hardening:

  • Workpiece length: 500 mm
  • Workpiece diameter: 250 mm
  • Workpiece weight: 6 kg per spindle

A Sustainable Alternative to New Equipment: Retrofitting

Framo Morat uses the INDEX V160 CNC vertical lathe for efficient and precise machining of chuck parts in small, medium, and large series.

Investing in a new machine is not always the best solution. Where technically feasible, we rely on retrofitting – the complete overhaul of existing systems by the manufacturer. A recent example: The INDEX V160 chuck lathe was recently comprehensively overhauled and is now back in operation – performing as powerfully as on day one. This approach is not only more sustainable but also economically sound and offers numerous additional advantages:

  • Existing maintenance and service knowledge is retained
  • Existing programs, tools, and fixtures remain usable
  • No ramp-up losses due to new processes or workflows
  • No additional training or onboarding required for staff
